My work is influenced by quick observations or glimpses of familiar sights in my surroundings and in the studio. Pieces begin as intuitive, material responses to these visual cues. A wide range of materials are chosen to create layers of meaning and irony in the pieces, and draw a relationship between the visual source and the cultural implications of a particular material.
I have a strong commitment to both craft and beauty, firmly believing that concept and idea travel most effectively along this path. A commitment to labor and time is prevalent in the majority of my work. The arduous nature of a particular task can seem almost ridiculous. Countless hours repeating a motion or action to produce an object or mark is eventually captured in a single visual moment.
Because the pieces spring forth intuitively in reaction to quick observations, I am constantly discovering elements of self, as well as layers of meaning in the work. Time, labor, craft, visual discovery, material choice, and concept add complex layers of irony, humor, and critique directed towards myself, and my actions.
I am currently living and working in Philadelphia, PA., in my second year as a Resident Artist at The Clay Studio.
